Josh Butler: Longbow’s Rising Star and General Manager of The Charleston

In the Peak District, where heritage and hospitality meet, Josh Butler has become a shining example of what dedication and perseverance can achieve.

From starting as a food runner at just 16 to now leading Longbow Venues’ newest flagship venue, The Charleston, Josh’s journey is a story of loyalty, passion and steady growth.

Building a career from the ground up

Josh’s introduction to hospitality began with a simple goal, earning enough for his first car. What started as a part-time job soon evolved into a long-term career. After completing a BTEC in public services and narrowly missing out on a police career, Josh focused entirely on hospitality, quickly standing out for his natural leadership and commitment.

In 2019, under the guidance of Rob Hattersley, he became a training lead at a PLC-run venue. Later that year, he was promoted to Assistant Manager and then soon after, contributed significantly to the reopening of The Maynard, navigating the challenges of the pandemic with resilience. By 2021, Josh took on the Deputy Manager role at The George in Hathersage before returning to The Maynard to complete his “finishing school” in hospitality management.

Leading The Ashford Arms to excellence

March 2024 marked a key milestone as Josh became General Manager of The Ashford Arms, overseeing is relaunch and transformation into a thriving venue in Longbow’s portfolio. His calm leadership, people-first approach and dedication to excellence made an immediate impact.

The next chapter: The Peacock and The Charleston

Following his achievements at Ashford, Josh brought his energy and expertise to The Peacock at Rowsley, continuing to elevate the guest experience. However, the journey doesn’t stop there. Josh has now been appointed General Manager of Longbow’s new flagship venue, The Charleston – a role that reflects nearly a decade of growth and dedication.

Josh is more than just a manager, he’s Longbows poster boy, embodying the values of loyalty, hard work and genuine care for both guests and colleagues.

A partnership build on trust

Josh’s nine-year working relationship with Rob Hattersley has been central to his journey, forged on shared values and mutual respect. As Rob puts it:

“Josh is the embodiment of what Longbow stands for—hard work, humility, and heart. Watching him grow from a food runner to leading our flagship venue has been one of the proudest parts of my journey. He deserves every success, and I couldn’t be happier to have leading this new venture.” — Rob Hattersley, Managing Director, Longbow Venues

Words from Josh

Reflecting on his career so far, Josh shared:

“It’s been an incredible ride. I’ve grown up with Rob, Steve and the team, and I’m proud of every step—from running food to running venues. The support from everyone has meant everything. I’m excited to lead The Charleston and keep pushing the standards of what hospitality can be.” — Josh Butler, General Manager, The Charleston

Josh Butler’s journey is about much more than career progression, it’s a story of resilience, commitment and the belief that great hospitality starts with great people.

Whether you’re dining at The Charleston, enjoying a meal at The Peacock, or relaxing at The Maynard, know that behind the experience is a leader who has earned his place through hard work and heart.
