Reviving History: A New Culinary Destination Coming to Bakewell

Exciting news is on the horizon for Bakewell as Longbow Venues, in collaboration with Coverland UK are submitting a joint planning application to convert the former Royal Bank of Scotland building into a thriving premium dining destination.

Set in the heart of Bakewell, this cherished sandstone structure, which first opened its doors in 1838, has sat dormant since 2018. But now, Longbow directors, Rob Hattersley and Stephen Atkinson, have announced the desire to turn the old bank into a premium dining experience that celebrates both local heritage and culinary excellence.

Longbow’s vision is to carefully restore the Grade II listed building, preserving the soaring ceilings, expansive windows, and intricate cornices. The interior design will pay homage to the building’s storied past and its picturesque surroundings, creating an ambience that is both elegant and inviting.

Central to the vision is a menu that highlights the best of Peak District people and produce. From farm-fresh ingredients to artisanal delights, each dish will tell a story of the region’s rich culinary heritage. To ensure the highest quality, Raymond Blanc-trained executive chef, Adrian Gagea, will craft a menu that surprises the senses and delights the taste buds.

We Need You – Can You Help Us Shape the Plans?

Ahead of submitting the planning application on May 17, managing director, Rob Hattersley and operations director, Stephen Atkinson are inviting you to drop in to two planned special community events.

Taking place at the old bank on Saturday, May 4 and Monday, May 6 between 10 and 4pm, Rob and Steve are looking to chat to locals about the plans, what to expect, suggestions and ideas. With the venue currently having no name, you’re also invited to suggest names for the proposed restaurant, seeking inspiration from its beauty, history, and setting.

60 New Jobs in Bakewell

Longbow Venues is committed to putting people over profits and with 60 new vacancies associated with the operating of a fourth venue, there are plenty of career opportunities with the company. Anyone looking to make hospitality their exciting, lucrative and rewarding career should pop in to register their interest.

A ‘Coming Home’ for Rob Hattersley

For Rob, this endeavour is deeply personal. Having grown up in Bakewell, he sees this project as a way to give back to his hometown and invest in its future.

“I grew up in Bakewell so reviving the bank, and turning it into a place that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, would feel like coming home,” explains Rob. “It also feels right to be rescuing such an iconic building, and investing in the local economy. It’s a principle that drives all of my business decisions.”

Rob believes that the new restaurant would be a valuable addition to the Bakewell culinary scene.

“My hospitality career started in Bakewell when I was 14 years old, working at my family’s restaurant, Aitch’s Wine Bar and Bistro,” he says. “Since that was sold 20 years ago, many people have said that there has been a gap. We have plenty of great cafes and traditional pubs but there is definitely room for a spacious, premium restaurant offering exceptional locally inspired dishes.”

The proposed restaurant will operate seven days a week, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea. And with its prime location in the heart of Bakewell, it promises to be a valuable addition to the town’s culinary scene.

This project is a collaboration between the independent hospitality company, Longbow Bars & Restaurants, and partners like Coverland UK and Concorde BGW group. Together, they aim to create a dining experience that is as memorable as it is delicious.
