The George Hathersage to Reopen June 13, 2024

The George Hathersage has an opening date!

We will be throwing those doors open and welcoming you back to our legendary local on Thursday, June 13, 2024 from midday.

We are taking restaurant and room bookings now and will be open in time for Father’s Day Sunday lunch on June 16th.

It’s Been 8 Long Months

We can’t quite believe it, and never expected it to go on this long, but by the time we open, we will have been closed for 8 long months.

It was Friday, October 20th when Storm Babet hit the UK and Hathersage was affected by flash floods.

Staff tried in vain to protect our beloved, historical 800-year-old pub but there was nothing we could do. The water poured in and the place was engulfed, affecting the kitchen and ground-floor bedrooms immediately.

As a company, we made a vow that everyone would keep their jobs, no matter what.

While The George had to go through an extensive drying out period and we wrangled with insurance claims, the team was redeployed to our sister venue, The Maynard. The team were smart, proactive and resourceful. Training sessions were held to improve knowledge, standards and procedures. A new career pathway called The Longbow Way was finalised so we can always focus on progressing from within.

Most impressively, the teams joined forces to create the smooth and efficient launch process that saw us open The Ashford Arms with great success. The hard work by all Longbow teams while The George was closed has ensured that any new venue we open under Longbow will be able to launch effectively and efficiently.

The whole team has done the company proud.

The Refurbishment

When you visit The George you’ll notice everything is pretty much new and restored.

Our bedrooms have been recreated in the same quirky style, full of character. You’ll notice a few new little surprises and details that will make you smile.

It’s going to smell new, look new, but it will be the same George that you know and love.

New Summer Menu

We’re reopening in time for Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16th so get your Sunday lunch bookings in quickly before we book up. When we open on Thursday 13th, we’re opening with a new summer menu.

Executive chef of Longbow, Adrian Gagea and head chef James Heywood, have been hard at work opening up the relationships with our much-loved local Peak District suppliers.

We’re sourcing the freshest local produce, locally reared meats and local fish suppliers plus regional artisan producers. Everything in our food comes to us locally, where possible, and that makes for the best, most fresh and flavoursome dishes.

Because we make everything from scratch, we can adapt the majority of our menu to be gluten-free without losing taste and texture of our dishes. With an extensive array of vegan and vegetarian dishes too, there’s something for everyone at The George.

We Can’t Wait to Welcome You Back

It’s fair to say you love The George, and we do too. General manager, Alice Houghton, has been keeping the whole team motivated and morale high thanks to her never-ending supply of energy, exceptional leadership and commendable people skills.

She and the team are fizzy giddy for opening day and can’t wait to welcome you back!

It’s time to breathe new life into The George.

We can’t wait to see you soon.
